Why the Demand for ABA Therapy Has Skyrocketed

August 24, 2023

The demand for applied behavioral analysis, or ABA therapy, has skyrocketed over the past decade. According to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, between the years 2010 and 2021, there was a 5800% increase in the demand for certified ABA therapists. If you're a job seeker who is looking to get into this booming line or work, or if you're a parent whose child may benefit from this treatment, you might be curious as to why this field has grown so rapidly. Here are three of the underlying causes for this increase in need.

More Individuals Than Ever Are Being Diagnosed With Autism

ABA therapy has been shown to be effective in helping individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Demand for this type of therapy has greatly increased since the number of individuals who have been diagnosed with Autism has grown. In 2010, the prevalence rate of ASD was 1 in 68. In 2023, the prevalence rate has increased to 1 in 36. While no one knows exactly why there has been such a large jump in ASD, there is more awareness about this condition than ever before. More doctors are asking questions that can lead to an early diagnosis, while more parents are also more educated, and therefore aware, of the symptoms.

The Stigma Surrounding Disabilities Has Greatly Decreased

Another reason why there is an increased demand for ABA therapy is that the stigma that existed when it came to disabilities, both mental and physical, has greatly decreased over the past 20 to 30 years. These days, there is an increased focus on helping individuals with disabilities live full and healthy lives. As such, treatment is more widely discussed.

ABA Therapy Has Had Amazing Results

The final reason why demand for ABA therapy has increased is because parents and medical professionals are seeing amazing results from those who are suffering with autism thanks to this therapy. ABA therapy is designed to increase positive behaviors and skills, while reducing negative behaviors such as aggression or self-injurious behaviors. These skills can then be used when an individual goes to school, work, or even while out running errands with loved ones.

The increased demand for ABA therapy and the limited number of certified professionals who offer this therapy has caused delays in individuals access to treatment.
