What to Do When Your Child Is Diagnosed With Autism

March 5, 2024

You might feel overwhelmed when you first hear your child has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Having a child with special needs can definitely be challenging, but with the right autism therapy and support, many children with ASD live happy and fulfilled lives. According to the CDC,  about 1 in 6 (17%) children aged 3–17 years were diagnosed with a developmental disability, as reported by parents, during a study period of 2009-2017. Here's what you can do if your child is diagnosed with this condition.

Getting the News

The first thing to do is learn as much as possible about ASD. Understanding your child's challenges and strengths will help you figure out the next steps. Speak to your child's doctor about specific behaviors you may see and ask for guidance finding autism therapy services like speech, occupational, and ABA behavioral therapy. There are also wonderful autism support groups, both locally and online where you can connect with other similar parents. You are not alone!

Getting the Right Services

Once equipped with knowledge about ASD, you can start seeking the best autism therapy for your child. Treatment plans are tailored to meet each child's unique needs. For example, ABA behavioral therapy can build important life skills by rewarding positive behaviors. Speech therapy facilitates communication development and occupational therapy aids sensory issues and improves coordination. Most children do best with a combination approach.

Advocate fiercely for your child to get autism therapy services through early intervention programs or their school district. Getting this support can be confusing with loads of paperwork but stay focused on getting them the therapy they deserve. Also, pursue medical insurance coverage for private autism therapy your child may need. Having a case manager can help navigate these systems.

Living Your Best Life

While getting your child the best treatment possible is crucial, don't forget about your needs, too! You can't pour from an empty cup. Have fun with your kid! Do things you both enjoy, like watching movies, playing games, or going to the park. Focus on abilities, not limitations, to find activities you can do together. Your positive attitude will encourage them to thrive.

This journey has challenges but also beautiful moments seeing your child learn and grow. With the proper autism therapy plan in place, you will get through the hard times and celebrate the milestones. If your child has been diagnosed, we can help with autism therapy.
