FREE SATURDAY COMMUNITY TRAINING – Missouri City Clinic
We have scheduled our next FREE Saturday community training for our Missouri City clinic! Our November training will go over strategies to increase your child’s independence across settings.
Increasing Independence in the Home and Community
Prompt dependency occurs when a person relies on assistance from others to complete tasks or activities. This is something we all experience; we often depend on our spouse’s reminder that the trash needs to be taken out before we complete the chore. However, for many individuals diagnosed with autism, prompt dependency is a larger issue that decreases personal independence across settings. When prompt dependency occurs, individuals may require reminders or assistance from others to consistently complete tasks such as washing hands, getting a snack, or completing a morning routine. This causes an over-reliance on others, decreasing opportunities for independence. This presentation will discuss how prompt dependency is developed, how to prevent it from developing, and strategies to increase independence.
