How to Help Prepare Your Child for ABA Therapy

March 27, 2024

Autism can have a dramatic effect on a child as well as a family and home. With ABA therapy, it's possible to put kids in a position to succeed. Here's how to help your child prepare for their first time in therapy.

Treat Therapy as a Positive

You need to make sure that your child doesn't feel like they're being punished. Therapy is a positive thing that can have a healthy impact on their life. Putting a positive spin on therapy will also help your child open up and be more proactive.

Find a Safe Place for Therapy

During ABA therapy, you want to make sure that you can speak openly with your BCBA about your child's behaviors or frustrations. Make sure to ask your BCBA about whether or not there's safety care training to help manage behaviors and de-escalate situations, whether there is in-person training available for staff, and whether there's always a supervisor on site.

Ensure That Your Child Is Well-Rested

Any child can be cranky, difficult, or unfocused if they're not well-rested. As much as possible, you'll want your child to get a good night's sleep or potentially a nap before therapy. We understand that children with autism may have issues getting to sleep or staying asleep. Talk to your BCBA about potential routines that could help to improve your child's natural sleep cycle, so both you and your child can feel great when the time comes to attend ABA therapy.

Get the Whole Family Involved

ABA therapy isn't just for a specific child but your whole family. It's a good idea to make sure that siblings, parents, and other caregivers participate when appropriate. The whole family may not be included in every session, but it's wise to make sure that everyone participates from time to time. This can lead to a happier, healthier home for everyone involved.

Get Started at an Early Age

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, autism should be screened at 18 and 24-month well-child visits. If an autism diagnosis is given to your child, it's a good idea to get a jump start on ABA therapy.
