How Can School District Consultations Improve My School?

December 19, 2023

Understanding autism on an administrative level in school districts is crucial to ensuring that every child receives an equitable education. Schools and school districts can improve their services for children with ASD by scheduling ABA consultation services. Keep reading to learn more.

What Are ABA Consultation Services?

An ABA consultation with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is intended to help schools create supportive environments for all students, by providing additional support and training to teachers and paraprofessionals. These consultation services can help school staff and teachers be better prepared for effective classroom services. The goal is to increase the capacity within the school district by expanding teacher's knowledge of how to work with and interact with students on the spectrum or related disorders. These consultations can be used to design intervention strategies for the entire classroom, in addition to developing student-specific solutions if needed.

What Does a Consultation Include?

ABA consultations in schools can range from a full-day workshop for continuing education to in classroom training and support. Consultations can also include training teachers on systems and techniques that can aid in the organization and routine of the classroom environment that supports students with ASD. Consultations can also include developing classroom schedules that increase efficiency, assisting staff with IEP goals, recording and interpreting data, behavioral assessments, training of staff, creating behavior intervention plans, and more. Within classroom consultations can be student specific to assist in reducing maladaptive behaviors that occur within the school setting.

How Do These Services Improve My School?

When schools receive expert training on how to better serve their students, everyone benefits. According to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, the demand for certified ABA therapists has increased by approximately 5,800% between 2010 and 2021 alone. Teachers will be empowered to better manage students, and the administration can rest assured that their school is building a reputation of inclusion and effective education for all students regardless of their challenges.

How Do ABA Consulting Services Help Parents and Students?

Parents of students with disabilities want one thing: an equitable education for their child. This is the entire point of IEPs and all types of educational accommodations. Parents grow frustrated when they feel that a school views these challenges as something to ignore. Parents want to see school districts that are actively engaging in educating themselves on these disorders and how to provide an equitable education for every child.

Students benefit from
ABA consulting services because, when a child feels that they are included and are a full-fledged part of the school community, they are set-up for success. School should be a place of safety and expansion. This is only possible when school districts work together to learn how to provide each child with what they individually need.
