4 Benefits of Early Autism Detection

September 25, 2023

Autism is a developmental disorder that impacts many people across the world. The diagnosis of autism falls on a spectrum, meaning how it impacts a child may range from mild or moderate to severe. Autism can often be detected in children as early as their toddler years. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, screenings for autism should occur at 18 and 24-month checkups when pediatricians are looking for general developmental delays. Here are a few reasons to ensure autism treatment happens early.

1. Start Therapies Earlier

Many children with autism significantly benefit from one or multiple therapies. ABA therapy and occupational therapy can help little ones adjust to the challenges they are having, increasing a variety of skills and improving daily functioning. Autism treatment may continue for years and your providers will work with you as your child grows older to meet new challenges.

2. Begin Parent Training

Raising a child with a developmental delay can be challenging but also extremely rewarding when given the proper tools. What you read in parenting books may not apply. Often, you may feel like you need help understanding what your child is experiencing. An early diagnosis means you can learn about your child and how to best support them as a parent sooner. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst will work one-on-one with you to help you understand what your child is going through and how to manage specific behaviors.

3. Improved Outcomes

Children may struggle with things like motor skills or communication. The earlier you start interventions, the better the outcome for your child will be. The brain’s ability to adapt and change is most significant during the earlier years of childhood. Early autism detection lets you take advantage of this narrow window of opportunity to ensure that treatment with ABA has a lasting impact on your little one.

4. Foundation for School

One area that children with autism often struggle in is school. Children diagnosed with autism may experience extreme stress and may lack the accommodations they need to create a healthy foundation for success in school. Obtaining an early diagnosis can provide you with the time needed to learn the rights for your child within the school setting and what should be included in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Instead of waiting, they can utilize the many resources provided to them as soon as they begin school.
