3 Important Benefits of ABA Therapy for Children With Autism

July 6, 2023

If you're a parent with a child who has autism, you're not alone. According to the CDC, it's estimated that one in 36 children has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many families are turning to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA therapy) as a way to offer evidence-based treatment to children on the autism spectrum. Today we'll take a closer look at a few of the many benefits that autism therapy can provide.

1. Developmental Growth

Children on the autism spectrum often require advanced education about behavior style. ABA therapy can help them better understand why certain situations aren't appropriate for all situations. New helpful behaviors are introduced and emphasis is placed on leaving old, less constructive behaviors behind. Speech and behavioral therapy modalities can also be introduced at this time. The goal of ABA is to provide and develop alternative skills that address problematic behaviors and replace them with more constructive actions. The treatment is comprehensive in nature.

2. Improved Communication

Communication can be an area with many deficits for children with autism. Improving communication skills is a bedrock area of treatment. The therapy entwined behavior skills that can also help the child improve their communication. It's an evidence-based treatment that utilizes proven methods to help children express themselves in healthier and appropriate ways. Functional communication skills can be taught through modeling and repetition. Non-verbal communication is also addressed, which helps the student increase their social interaction skills as well. ABA therapy is an effective way for parents to help their children reach their full potential, no matter their starting point.

3. Pathway for the Future

Now that behavioral scientists have a better grasp of how autism can affect children and families, their treatments are becoming more beneficial. There are currently three modules that are used in ABA therapy and treatment. The first is Early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI), which is the most comprehensive. Focused ABA is appropriate for school-age children, and Consultative ABA is taught to caregivers and parents. Using a multi-front approach that includes education for parents and caregivers improves the success rate and level of the overall therapy. Now is an ideal time to learn more about ABA and its appropriateness for your family.
